Project Nim&Half Brother

Project Nim and Half Brother

hdurnin

As we read the book ‘Half Brother’ the book was about a baby chimp named Zan who lived as s human for 5 years with his human family. Te was there for a reason because Richard (the dad of Zan) used Zan as a project; Zan was forced to use sign language. After a few years Zan was starting to bite people and throwing things out the window. Zan was sent away to a place for chimps, at Dr.Helsons place. None liked it;every chimp was mostly abused because they were not acting right. After Ben found out that Zan was being sold, Ben and Sara tried stealing him.

After reading the book, we watched the movie ‘Project Nim’ which is based on ‘Half Brother’, this movie was mostly the same thing as the book, Nim was like Zan., Nim loved cats as well did Zan. Nim was taken to over 4 homes in the past 7 years. Nim starting biting people the same age Zan did, Nim had to wear diapers and so did Zan. Zan and Nim were both forced to use sign language. Both chimps didn’t like the father.

Things I found disturbing were when Nim got taken away from his mother. On camera we saw the of Nim mother rocking back and forth in misery. The mother had over 5 chimps taken away from her. I didn’t like that whenever the chimps bite, they tranquilize them until they stop biting. I didn’t like that they sometimes put the chimps to work. I hated the fact that they chimps drink and smoke. It really disgusted me when they talked about chimps getting murdered and other chimps killed themselves because they didn’t like where they were living.

Happy things are when Nim and Zan loved cats and dogs, and Nim and Zan loved going outside to play. Zan liked sticking up for Ben. Nim and Zan got to meet new chimps. Ben met Rachel and Nim met Lily. Nim moved to Black-Beauty Ranch, and got 2 other chimps, (Lulu and Mitch) from the LEMSIP (animal testing factory). Nim liked pulling books off the shelf. Zan really liked animals, cats, dogs.

Zan and Nim are different because Nim got sent to the LEMSIP and Zan was very close to going there. Nim killed a dog and Zan didn’t. Zan never stayed in a cage longer then Nim. Nim liked to be with lots of people. Zan only wanted to be with Ben or Sara or Peter alone, like he wanted them all to himself.

After watching the movie, I felt as if we all needed to help with animals that are being abused, misused and mistreated. I hated how the chimps that were being used as “humans” in a science lab for us humans to use the product. After a while the chimps slowly pass away because of so much of the product. Some chimps go crazy because they have too much of the product in the chimp. There are still have animal testing in Canada here today, it really makes everyone sad hearing about animal testings, I’m sure there’s a cure for cancer but you can’t use animals for that. I’m not saying humans would be the possible way for cure of cancer but something else has to work. What would you think would work for a cure for cure cancer that’s living?

War Of 1812 ! :D

“Ready?! & FIRE!”

War of 1812 started like this, hearing our leaders telling us what to do in order to keep us alive. This was my class trip to the battlefield.

After a long bus ride we finally got off at Robin Barker-James house, and we were here to relive the war of 1812, Us Canadians were British fighting with the Americans. We had a great day planned ahead of us. As my class and I got into the barn, Robin said we would have to wait a while for our American friends to get here. Everyone looked around the barn and saw Robin had mostly everything from the world wars, he had: gas masks, bullets, canons balls (12 pounder), war suits, boots, helmets, muskets, war of 1812 British suits, old glass, old buttons that were off of a Canadian soldier (1917), flags, it looked like he was prepared for war!

Our American friends finally came, so we all headed into training. Our leader was Greg and Mr.Ross. We all started off with cannon training, it was A LOT of fun. We had to go through at least 3 or 4 steps to fire the cannon. The British won that training, The day that Robin planned for us was amazing! We got to do 2 battles: Lundy’s Lane (the most bloodiest battles ever) and Fort Niagara. Everyone got t-shirts, Our natives got a green shirt, British got red coats and Americans got blue. After we all got done training with our muskets, we all headed to an old farmer’s field, to the Lundy’s Lane. Our Natives faught first with the Americans.

One of my best moments of this trip was meeting Americans friends. It’s good to know that we made friends from another country. They seem to have the same life as we do, they don’t disrespect us and our country. They liked to come back to Canada very soon. Americans are very generous, they like to talk and make new friends like we do.

This big idea for coming to Tillsonburg was that War of 1812 wasn’t a game, they didn’t fight we wouldn’t be living in a free country. British and Native Americans fought for our country, we would be living in America if we hadn’t won the war. The wars that happened and are still happening were very brutal and I bet no one that has fought would want to back in again. Lots of soldiers died to have freedom for our country.

Saddle Up!!

Brush away! Tack up! Let’s get riding!
An English saddle is about over 3000 years old. In about 2000 BC people mostly Greeks started to ride horses but mostly bareback. Some people found out that riding bareback was very uncomfortable for them, and then saddle began to come into place with padded so its comfortable for them. In the 5th century BC some people found a saddle made of leather, animal skin and hair so they thought about making leather stirrups to go with the saddles. With an English saddle you can do dressage, jumps, and racing.

This is an English saddle

With an Western saddle it developed in the 19th century it was used for working on the ranch for catching cattle. From the 1700s to the 1950s the western saddle began to change with new looks and more better ways to sit better in the saddle and stirrups. In the 1960s it wasn’t all about work it all changed .. it was about cutting, reining, barrel racing, team roping, trail riding.

This summer I went into 2 horse shows and about 2 parades, it was really enjoyable. The first horse show I went into was in Clinton we were all in a hurry I got told that I wasn’t going to the show so I went to my dads, then they called and said we are going tomorrow get ready to go in the morning! It was a last second change of plans. When we got there we had to hurry into the arena because we were late! It was a pretty good show though almost everyone got ribbons. There was about 20 different categories in the show there poles, barrel racing, team roping, team relay, Texas speed and action, trail riding, horsemanship, showmanship, best mare, best gelding, open command, equitation, western pleasure, keyhole and open stake flag race. They were all really fun! After I was done my teacher (Joanne) said “get off the horse” so I did and she took the horse ! She left with hers and took other, I didn’t know where she was going so I followed her but then she went into the arena so I got on hers watched for about 2 seconds When she was done she made me get off and go back to mine. The other horse show I went to was in Teeswater it was another last second planned thing for us, this time we took about 12 people with 10 horses in 3 trailers. Woah!! It was quite the say packed with people at lunch we each got about 15 minutes off their horse, so I had some lunch after that I went back to the trailer to go feed the horses a little hay .. When I got there I saw on the the horses NOT tied up and eating the grass I ran straight to horse then I turned around and heard people talking and asking what I was doing and I looked at everyone, I was confused then all I saw was Brain was standing there with a long lead rope getting the horse I thought they were all crazy!

The first parade was in Wingham and we waited for most of the people have gone before us so we got to see most of it.. I saw really cool floats there. Most of the kids were yelling “HEY! Look there’s horses!”, so they ran up to us in the middle of the parade just to pet the horse.. boy! Kids must love horses these days…

Horse drawing were found in 3000 BC. In 1908 people started horse showing with horses and competing nowadays people horse race. Men/ Women started riding horses at 6000 BC horses were categorized used by usage, not by breed. The breed Paso Fino is an America’s 500 year old new horse breed to the states, Paso Finos have a very fine walk compared to the Quarter Horse. Paso Finos are not related to the Peruvian Paso they may look alike but they are both different breeds. Quarter horses can be used for anything really for work at the farm, Western showing, and English showing.. In the old days this horse was used for farming, hauling, in harness and undersaddle. English settlers raced them over stretches for about a quarter of a mile. This horse is the most fastest horse in the world when they raced the record was about 20 seconds .. fast huh? Thoroughbreds are mostly used for racing its the most valuable in all the horse breeds. It was known has the English Thoroughbred because it came into England in the 17th or 18th centuries most people thought racing was very popular back in the days. Mongolian was found in China , they are used for carting, 4 horses, and farm work.

Half Brother (: !

In the story Half Brother, at the start Ben didn’t want to have any friends over at his house because of Zan. This theme reminds me of the time last year, my dad embarrassed me when I would always be on my phone, I would never answer him he always use to say.. “I’ll text it to you” in public out loud!So embarrassing everyone thought I was deaf.. But now he doesn’t anymore (: which doesn’t embarrass me just like when Zan doesn’t embarrass Ben in front of his friends anymore.

Save the Polar-Bears!!

What we were working on was about is polar bears and how they live, the big problem was about the polar bears coming into town and trying to find food because there is no ice which means no seals to hunt. My teachers friend (Andy Mckeil) went to Chruchill for 5 days to study the polar bears.   During the 5 days he was away we all came up with doing this project. Why people want to do this is because they love them and they want to keep them alive as much as they can.Because of Mr. Mckeil we got to make a fun geography project about polar bears and Chruchill we had to describe Location, Place, Region. We all thought about fundraising for the polar bears we made it up to $293 out of 31 students in about a week to bring in the money. We skyped with Andy and told him all about how we are saving up the polar bears he was so happy to hear about it. Mrs.D bought coca cola with the new white cans and specially made just  for us.

I was really happy about doing this with the class because  love animals and I want to help. Thank you Mrs.D for letting us have this project. This was the funnest experience I am have through this year. We had lots of information to work with and I am hoping we can do this again with another animal.  I think the skype calls help me because we get lots of information and its really fun to talk to people around the world.

My Cross-Country Math Data

                                My Cross Country Math Data

There are improvements that I made this fall for cross country running project that I ran is 1.5 km and I took 5:00. Before I made the same time but it took 25 seconds more then my first time.

There are goals that I have made with my cross country running project .  One goal that I got to is never stopping and keep running. Mrs.D told my class is to pretend that we were pulling the air for a better go to keep running. I think that helped me with my goal is that I tried not stopping for at least two times around the school and I made my goal.

Step 1 :1.5 – 5:00 =3.5 Step 2 :3.5 / 100 = 0.035 Step 3 :35 * 100 = 3500%

Ten Marks And A Train Tickets

Ten Marks And A Train TicketsBenno’s Escape to Freedom

By Susy Goldstein, Gina Hamilton and Wendy Share

This story is based on a true story told by a nine year old German boy who left Berlin to save his and his brothers life. Benno only had ten marks ($100 in Canada today) and a train ticket. When Benno left is family with his brother Heniz, Hitler took over Berlin and sent half the Jews to camp and the other half were murdered by the Nazis.

My Timeline

Quotation
My quotation was on the first chapter of the book, ‘’ We are going to have a new experience’’ This was true they did have a new experience. Living like today we won’t have to do this anymore because I know my country has us protected. This was the most hardest because you have to leave you family and never ever see them again.

What surprised me was that the Nazis had no fear about killing the Jews. They had no fear about anything they didn’t even worry about whats going to happen next. What are they going to do for the rest of their lives? In the bad thoughts and of images still stuck in their head about killing the Jews. It’s going to be in their head for a long time and they will never ever forget about it even if they try to.
I learned that the world is full of love and hate. There are bad times and then there’s good times, Good thoughts and bad thoughts.

Questions
Why didn’t they (Nazis) stop Hitler ?
Do any Naizs regret killing any Jews ?

Idea Hive Similarities and Differences

Hi to everyone in the Idea Hive! This year we are working on similarities blog post. Everyone had really great answers. The answers are between Snow Lake and Wingham. Wingham  is a small town so is Snow Lake. This is my first year on the Idea Hive we are all going to work on the mini laptops all year round. I think it’s really cool to be working with people that are in Manitoba.Something I have in common with all of the students are all of us hate gross things. I hate almost everything that lives on the ground and that is gross. I probably can’t live with reptiles in my house. Almost everybody hates snakes so do I. Something I have in common with other students is that I have some pets and some other people have pets too (Zackary, Kash, Joan). Things that I have in common with most people are some people likes to go to gym class (Kole, Karissa and, Spencer). Only a few people like the show The Big Bang Theory (Jaocb, Dylan, and Kash). I don’t really watch the show but sounds pretty funny. Something that I think is unique about me is I’m the only one who wants to go to Africa and help the sick Africans.
I would like to be a partner with Madison because she sounds pretty funny and we both like the some things (somewhat). I think Madison and I would be good partners because I think we would will work really good together. What me and Madison have in common its we both like the same T.V show.
I wonder how cold it get up in Manitoba ?

Summer ’11

This summer was the best I did so much ! But one thing I didn’t do was go to the Groto in Tobermory.  It looks so much fun but I didn’t get to go : ( . My family was all going to go but it was windy and rained this whole time. Anyway the Groto is a HUGE hole people dive into. I think you might of been there at Camp Celtic with the grade ⅞’s? But my family was very disappointed to not go but there’s a whole lot of summers up ahead right? I have been to Tobermory before but not for the Groto  been there for the Chi Chi Mon and the glass bottom boat, that’s the first time I have every been there before, Then … Our car broke down when we were on our way to the Groto. So we were that close to going to the Groto.

The best person I met this summer was at OPC (Ontario Pioneer Camp)  Her name was Beverly. She was the grasshopper lady (the woman who’s in charged of babysitters) and a gym teacher. She was the best , She only stayed there for one week. She almost scared me to death! We were all walking down to go get our kids for babysitting and she grabbed my head. People were walking by thinking, “wow “she is bad at this. But I told her the wrong story so that makes us even .. It was pretty funny if you were watching it. Beverly reminded me of my Aunt Kendra .. crazy, funny, wired … not in a bad way though. She was the one who made the dinner table fun for the other babysitters. She was kind of like my mother who made us eat when were not all that eating type of people (vegetables and all the gross type of foods). At OPC she was the best person I met this summer. The person I spent the most time with was my horseback riding teacher Jo-Anne Workman. We went to the Teeswater horse show on Sunday 28th of August and the Milvertin show too. We went trail riding and there was a snake on the ground and the horse didn’t even jump. But  I did  I almost fell off but I tried not to. I had to wash the horses after they came in from outside. Boy do they sweat a lot! I had a fun time in summer 2011.Questions for you :
-How could you carry boat around all day ?
-What was one of the kittens name?
