Comparing “Half Brother” and “Project Nim”

The grade ⅞ class read a book called “ Half Brother” and watched a documentary called “ Project Nim.” After we compared the book and the movie together to see what was similar, different, new information disturbing times, and happy times.

Nim and Zan have a lot of similarities. They were both taken from their mothers and used for an experiment. They also were taught sign language and were treated like a human.  When they grew older they both wanted to be the dominate male and they were both very strong. Nim and Zan both made really good friends when they moved from place to place. They had a lot of teachers through this journey.

Nim and Zan also have a lot of differences too! First they have different names. Nims first parent Stephanie was very unorganized. Stephanie did not want Nim to learn even though that was the whole experiment. Richard and Sarah taught Zan so much! In the end Nim died and Zan didn’t.

Some new information from Project Nim was that chimps can remember people who have been gone from them for at least a year, for example, Nim remembered Stephanie when she was gone for a year. Also back in the 70’s some people like Stephanie let chimps smoke, drink, etc.

There were quite few things disturbing in the movie. It was disturbing when Nim’s mother was shot and she started to make scary noises. They also should not let them smoke. It was disturbing when they zapped Nim and gave him needles to knock him out. At first Nim was free and then he was locked in a cage which he was not used to.

Although there was some disturbing times in the movie there were also happy times too. Nim was a very fast learner because he was taught so well by Herb and Bob and a lot more teachers.  He had a baby. His owners gave him friends like Lily. Bob helped so Nim was less lonely.

Relax

Do you know what awesome is? Is awesome quiet or loud? Well in this case it can be both!  Awesome is laying in bed on a rainy day in the soft and cozy blankets, while listening to music. Singing and dancing to the music as it plays. You don’t care what people think of you right now because you are just having fun! No one is interrupting you. You can hear nothing but your music playing.  Now that is awesome!

Ready, Aim, Fire

On April 26 the grade ⅞ students went to Tillsonburg for a re-enactment of the war of 1812. With all the help from Robin Barker-James we learned so much about  what the war was like in 1812. We got to use weapons and actually fight Americans which was really cool. We met so many new friends.

My best moments were shooting the musket because we got to use dog kibbles. Another reason why I liked the musket was because it felt so real. I liked  shooting the cannon because it wasn’t just one person, it was 4. We all had to work together and help each other out. Nobody was left out, everybody had to do something which it was like in the War of 1812.

We learned a whole lot of things like how to load a musket. First we had to had to load the musket with dog kibbles. Then we had to put it in ready position. Last we fired. The strategy we used was to all go at the same time and then it will confuse them. It would also help to go at the same time and it will hit them more, and scare them.

The big idea that we learned was that back in the war, these people fought against family and friends. Yesterday we fought against the Americans. Robin Barker James said that the Americans were our cousins. They went in the war for a good reason, not just to have fun.

Animal Testing= Animals Treated Bad

The past couple of months, Snow Lake and Turnberry have been reading a book called “Half Brother” by Kenneth Opel. In the book a family adopted a chimp and are teaching him to sign. They are also learning about animal testing. The question that I chose to answer is: How do you feel about animal testing? If you are against, would your feelings change if the animals were treated well?

These animals are happy, until they have to be tested.

I am against animal testing but my feelings would change if animals were treated well. Some scientist might use animals for bad things while testing in experiments. They use them to test weedkillers and ingredients in cleaning fluids which is not treating these animals right. Animals are forced to be used in useless experiments. These animals are used to see if they could get cancer when they were forced to inhale tobacco, smokes and more. I think they should stop animal testing because they are doing horrible things with these animals and should be treated with respect.

What do you think about animal testing? Should the animals be treated better?

Exploring ” Half Brother” with Snow Lake!

For the past couple weeks we have been skyping with Snow Lake and reading a book called” Half Brother” In the novel ” Half brother” Ben and his family are arguing and need to work together. This reminds me of my family and how they  argue and fight sometimes and need to work together. They also need to become more of a family. Even though my family fights a lot they can work together to make things right, and so can Ben and his family.

Mice

Ahhhh! My cousins and I were sledding on the back of the snowmobile
when all of a sudden we saw a mouse! I was so scared of mice! Of course when
we saw that mouse we had to fall off. When we fell off we were running as fast
as we could trying to catch up with the snowmobile when all of a sudden I seen
it in our sled so we tipped the sled over and it ran away. After, we went on again
in a different area and saw another mouse! Pretty much wherever we went we
saw mice. After that I did not want to go on anymore so I went inside to tell my
mom and Aunt Tina what happened, then I saw my cousin and the others were
having so much fun so I went back outside. Then I was so scared I had to go on
the snowmobile and make sure their were no more mice to be seen. My dad saw
some so just to make us scared he tried to run over it with the snowmobile but I
am so glad he missed. I think my dad got rid of most of them because we never
seen another one again because they were scared of the snowmobile. Since that
day I was always scared to go sledding at their house.

Melissa’s polar bear post

The problem that we are studying is that right now in Churchill the polar bears ice
is melting so they can’t catch there food anymore,( seals). However the seals live in
the water and the ice is how the polar bears get their food. As a result the ice is melting
because of global warming. I created a Glogster to summarize my research.
First, our class started a project on whats happening to the polar bears.Next we found a
website that said to adopt a polar bear(polarbearsinternational. We made a pack that we
would adopt a polar bear. Lastly our class set a goal and that goal was to raise 250
dollars in a week. We are so proud of ourselves because we raised 293 dollars in that
week to help save a polar bears.

My thoughts are that we did a great job on it and it was great to have this experience.
First we learn so much about polar bears. For example, thta their ice is melting and they
can’t catch the seals. It was so fun because we got to skype with Mr Mckiel and learn al
l the stuff that he did when he was in Churchill. Throughout this experience it was really
fun and important because we helped save  polar bear because we were a community.

Melissa’s Cross Country Running At School 2011

Introduction
This year we were practicing for cross country running. We ran everyday and increased our time. We kept track of our data and are now making a graph and project on our running.

The Written Analysis
1. There is an improvement I have made in my cross country running this fall. I have improved from September 9 to September 12. I went the same distance and went 7 seconds faster then before. For example: 4.12-4.05=0.07, I went 0.07% better.

2.There is a goal I have made this year to improve my physical fitness. That goal is to run 2.0 km and get a time that is under 15 minutes. I can make this goal if I pr

Melissa’s TMTT Blog Post

Introduction
I have read the novel Ten Marks And A Train Ticket by Gina Hamilton, Susy Goldstein, and Wendy Share. It is a book about two boys who their town gets destroyed and tooken over by the Nazis. They have to travel to many countries and end up in Canada. This book is written by his two daughters.                 melissas-tmtt-timeline

Graphics:
The most memorable image from this story was when Benno and Heinz found out that their parents died. Their parents and little brother Charlie died in a concentration  camp by the Nazis and Hitler. Know Benno and Heinz  have no other family that can take care of them or love them. They are all alone.

Quotation:

One quotation I found was on page 60. After lunch the mother superior called us down.” I have been informed that some of you are to be moved”. It was true we were leaving. This is important to the characters because know they might have a chance to leave this place. They did not like the place because they had to do so much work.

I thought this was an amazing book because it was so interesting. It was important for people to read this book because it gives alot of information about world war 2 and Hitler. I learned alot of what happened to Benno and Heinz’s family and about Auschwitz concentration camp. Something that surprised me was what happened to Benno’s little brother and his parents. Something else that surprised me was both boys made it threw everything. How did Heinz die?
How did Benno feel when the swastika symbol was on his car?

Idea Hive Similarities and Differences

This is my first year on Idea Hive and here are some similarities and differences between Turnberry and Snow Lake schools. We made a survey to see what we have in common and what we have that is different about each other. Now we have got the results of all the people in Snow Lake and Turnberry.Something everyone has in common is we all don’t just sit around and do nothing for a hobby. Something I have in common with most people like  Taylor W, Cassidy A, Alyssa H, Cassidy, and Mercedes is we all like shows off of the Much channel. Something I have in common with a few people are Cassidy A and Alyssa are we all like the show Pretty Little Liars. Something unique  about me is that I am the only person who wants to be a Kindergarten teacher. A person that is similar to me is Wesley because he has a fish and he has also been out of Canada.
A question I would like to ask is how many schools do you guys talk to on Skype?
