Half Brother vs Project Nim

Just recently we read the book Half Brother and watched the documentary Project Nim. There are some similarities, differences, new info, disturbing scenes, and happy things. In  both there were also some sad parts too but overall it was an amazing book and documentary.

Some similarities that I noticed are that both Richard and Wer don’t like Zan, and Zan didn’t like them. Zan would always knock the books off the shelf and not get in trouble and Wer did not like that.

But there were also some differences, I noticed that all the characters have different names and most were different gender. Nim was allowed to smoke and drink in the documentary but in the book Zan wasn’t. Some more differences that I noticed were in Project Nim, Nim was at two facilities but in the book he was only in one. And in the book they stole Zan and in Project Nim they wanted him to stay at the facility.

There was also some disturbing parts in the book. I found kind of disturbing that Nim was allowed to smoke joints and drink alcohol. ln the documentary Nim threw a dog against the wall and killed it then almost killed Stephanie by dragging her around like a rag doll. It was also disturbing when it said that two chimps committed suicide and one other got murdered.

I thought that it was a happy scene when Wer left and Nim was happy and loved his family. It was also happy when Nim got a room mate at the first camp and the second. It is nice that Zan liked Black Beauty Farm so much he wanted to stay with his new chimp friends. And at the Black Beauty Farm, Bob was a regular visitor to Nim which made him so happy for the next day to come.

From watching the documentary we got new info. Like he learned more signs than the book told us. Also that Nim was a dad to a girl. The book didn’t tell us that Nim was a loud to smoke joints. Nor was he a loud to drink alcohol.

On April 26 my class and I went to Tillsonburg, Ontario  to compete against grade 10 students from Michigan, U.S.A in a re-enactment of the War Of 1812. The best memories for me was throwing the cannon ball (tennis ball) eliminating their last last cannon which gave us 5 victory points to win the first challenge. Also I enjoyed the bully beef stew while talking to the American students.

Some strategies that I have learned were to send some Native Americans around the side of the fort as a decoy while the cannons and muskets are being fired at the fort to kill everyone. I also learned how to load a musket properly; what you do is you put some gunpowder in the pan then the rest in the barrel. After you put the powder in you put the musket ball in, ram it in with the ramrod, cock the gun and shoot.

I think the big idea of yesterday was to see what the soldiers had to do in 1812 and how hard it was to be in war. Also I think it might have been to see different perspectives on the War Of 1812 by American students and Canadian students acting as British.

Jeff’s Epic Chimp Blog Post:)

The class of grade 7/8 students of Turnberry.C.P.S are reading the book Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel with a class in Snow Lake Manitoba. Half Brother is about a family that adopts a chimp to see if Zan (the chimp) could talk to humans with sign language. I am against animal testing.I am against animal testing because humans don’t test on other humans. Every human has the right to not be tested on so animals should also have a say in if they can be tested on.In some cases animals can die from being tested on with drugs. If scientists are trying to create a new medicine, they have to try it on animals and some times they die because it doesn’t work.So in conclusion I think that animal cruelty is wrong. Have you ever been cruel to an animal even if it was just teasing your dog or cat?

My Epic Idea Hive Collaborative Learning Post

Working in the Idea Hive with Snow Lake connects you with people from different provinces and even country’s and it is an experience I think every kid should get. For example we Skyped with a teacher from Texas and we got to learn about there tradition culture and climate and they got to learn about our traditions culture and climate.

When reading the book Half Brother it reminded me of when I was watching Two And A Half Men Walden found out that his mom adopted a chimpanzee to study if a chimp and a boy can grow up together. When he got old it was then his mom told him the truth.

My Polar Bear Fundraiser

The issues affecting the polar bears is global warming.  Which means they have no where to hunt for ringed and bearded seals. And we have decided to adopt a polar bear To help pay for research to help him survive. So we decided to set a $250 goal for adopting a polar bear, over the past 2 weeks we brought in money to help out. We ended up raising $293. So we are going to get a $250 polar bear and a $30 polar bear. We made a special bulletin board special for fundraising.

The first thing that we did is Isaac and Shelby found an adopt a polar on the website Polar Bears International. Secondly our class set a goal of a $250 polar bear.Next we had around between 1 and 2 weeks to bring $250. For the end product we ended up raising $293. So we are going to get a $250 polar bear and a $30 polar bear.

I think it was a great idea and it fits in with our geography unit that we are doing. I am going to try to convince my mom to let me do it at my house. My grandma sponsored us $20 to get a good head start. After all the work our class has done I learned a lot of cool facts about them. Like that standing on their back legs they can be as tall as 12 feet tall.

It was really cool being able to learn so much about the polar bears and skypeing with Andy McKiel. Andy was asked to go to Churchill, Manitoba to help with the technology for the live web casts that were keeping everyone up to date on the polar bears. It was a really great experience. It was a lot of fun and we are helping 2 polar bears. And for all of our hard work we did we got to celebrate with special doughnuts from Tim Horton’s with white icing and grape jelly and to drink we got white coke in favour for the polar bears. Why the cans are white instead of red you might ask; well Coke is showing their support to the polar bears.

Math Running Project

There are goals that I have made in my running. Those goals are less time watching TV and not as much junk food. I will try to get outside and play road hockey, run and go to the park more often.

There are improvements I have made in my running. Those improvements are building confidence in myself and keeping a better pace. First I would sprint off the bat and then have to walk most of the way. But now I know to jog and don’t sprint until the very end.

Ten Marks and a Train Ticket

The grade ⅞ class of T.C.P.S. read the book Ten Marks and a Train Ticket by: Susy Goldstein, Gina Hamilton and Wendy Share. While reading the book I learned that Hitler was more brutal than most people would expect (even after they hear what he did). This book was about two young boys named Heinz and Benno who are sent away from Germany on the Kinder transport to safety. There parents Max and Golda and their little brother Charlie said they would meet up with them as soon as they could. But after a couple years the boys found out their parents and little brother had been murdered in Auschwitz (Hitlers biggest concentration camp) upon arrival.

One image stands out for me is when Benno is telling his life story to his grand children. This stands out for me because I can relate to this because my grandpa would always tell stories about his past when I went to his house for dinner.

My Brain-Drain question is: Did Benno get a job and if he did, what job did he get?

Idea Hive Similarities and Differences

Hi, I’m Jeffpewt this is my first year with the Idea Hive. It is really cool because we get to talk to a class 2700 kilometers away.
mrmayoIt is really cool because we get to talk to a class 2700 kilometers away. One thing everyone has in common is that we all have a favourite thing to do in school. Emily likes math, french and gym. What most people have in common is that a lot of people have pets. Some have dogs, cats and hamsters. For example me, BradPewt, and Erin have pets. Only a few people watch baseball. And most people who watch baseball cheer for the Jays like BradPewt and SavaStac. I was the only person who wanted to get an  A+ in gym. Me and Riley are most alike because we both don’t have a nickname and also we  both have a cat.

How many classrooms are in your school?

SUMMER ROX:)

This summer I met my new best friend Owen. I met Owen on my baseball team. We found we are into the same things. When we’re on the field we cheer each other  on. Even our Moms get along so well my mom put  in a resume  at Grumpy’s  for his mom.
I spent the most time with Owen and my other friend Marshall. I met Owen playing baseball and I met Marshall at an Ironmen hockey game. I slept over at Marshall’s  house about three times and Owen’s five times. I kind of wish I didn’t spend as much time with them and more with my Dad.

I bought a new baseball glove. It cost $85 but it has worked very well. I hope it will last me at least two more years. It is a Rawlings Play Maker series but now I have to save up for a trapper because I play back catcher.

1. What was your favourite thing that you did this summer?

2. How long was the canoe trip that you and your family went on?
