Just another Idea Hive Sites site

We have finished reading half brother and watched Project Nim the movie about the story the book was based on.  The first thing I noticed when we watched the movie was that Herb is definitely where Kenneth Oppel got the idea of Ben’s dad from, In the movie I found that Nim is introduced as an animal right off the bat he isn’t the cute little loving chimp that we all know Zan is in the book Nim is emphasized right at the beginning as an animal and you can’t ever change that.  Now with character similarities, I think Oppel got the character of Peter from a combination of Bill and Bob, I think Dr. Helsen might have had a bit of herb inspiration in his character, But I am pretty sure Ben and all the other Kids from school were conjured up with Oppels imagination.  The book was aimed at a pre teen audience so Zan was intoduced more as a pet than an animal Zan was more like a dog he only bit who he didn’t trust but Nim was a monkey  right from the start and didn’t change.

Animal Testing

As many people in the don’t like to talk or think about is animal testing.  There are many things to speak about in this subject like testing hair products on monkeys, spraying substances into animals eyes until they go blind and blasting monkeys into space to make sure the humans will survive.  The last one might sound cool but think about it, they were blasted into space to make sure humans didn’t die and It’s even worse when you learn the process of making the decision to blast them to space, to make sure space suits were air tight they stuck monkeys in space suits and stuck them in a tank of water to make sure the spacesuit was air-tight if it wasn’t the monkey’s drowned, they put monkeys on rocket sleds to test if they could stand the G-force.  Then we can move on to hair products and make up, whatever you have for hair products might and probably has been tested on animals unless it has the not tested on animals label.  Product testing on animals is illegal in Canada.

Europe not animal tested picture.

I am glad product testing on animals is illegal in Canada but it is not illegal in Europe.  Where I am on animal testing is kind of in the middle because if there is a disease plague and they have to use animals to find a cure I’m okay with that, but product testing on all kinds of animals is terrible.  Animals that are commonly tested on are albino rabbits, monkeys, wistar lab rats, dogs and fruit flies.  I,m okay with insects that there are plenty of because when take a minute to think about you have at least stepped on spiders 2 times in your life and swatted many flies.   At this point I really can’t explain any more than I have, so I rest my case.

Well… here we are half way through the school year, it was a long treacherous journey but I survived.  The way my current overall marks came out so far (they are all in the fifties and seventies) I am not too happy, sure seventy or higher is okay, but to me fifties and sixties are awful (the marks parents shouldn’t have to see) but I show my parents anyways.  For my Exams I studied the night before because I just got back from Disney world and took a little too long to get organized, though I thought I did good for cramming everything the night before the test, most of my exam marks were in the range of sixty to eighty.  During the first half of the school year we did Ancient Egypt in social studies (history), Optics in science, poetry in English, activities in french (still in progress) and started Ancient Rome  in social studies.

I have done some studying on the book halfbrother and i know the story line some of you might find this blog post helpful with choosing your next book to read. The story line of the book is about a boy whose parents are university professors and bring home a chimp one day, the reason why is because his parents are testing to see if raising a chimp as a human will change it’s behavior, the chimps name is Zan.  Once the funds for the experiment are cut,   Ben (the main character) tries to convince his parents that Zan is family meanwhile risking everything he knows  and loves to save his little brother.  The book is based off a real story, the project was known as project nim

Lately we have working in Google docs and presentations with another class in Wingham we are doing life in the 70′s before we start reading half brother by Keneth Oppel a book about a family who takes in a Chimpanzee and raises it like a human child.  This book is based off a true story that takes place in the 70′s.  It is part of an experiment called project nim.  Project nim was a scientific experiment to see if raising a Chimpanzee as a human affect’s it’s behavior.  One of the main things about this project is communication between the family and the chimps, the solution was sign language but of course the family had to learn it to and that is how they spoke to Nim.  Now I am back to the working with Wingham first we started studying up on  70′s news, clothes, movie, shows, cars, hairstyles and who was the prime minister in the 70′s, it is kind of hard to work with people miles away but you have to come to a compromise.  Half Brother is about a boy and his parents are university professors and his father is obsessed with animal behavior one of his experiments was does raising a chimpanzee as a human change it’s behavior except in the chimps name is zan.  When we are finished I probably will do a little review on the book when were done.
