Nim and Zan one monkey?
We started working on half brother around the beggining on January and we read the book with Wingham almost everday we could together. It first started over skype and when Mrs. Durnin bought the radio she had then started reading the book to us over it. While Mr. Fisher or Mrs.Durnin were reading we were asked to post our opinion in the days meet while talking together as two classes. When we finished the chapter or pages we were reading for the day we went to the stickies and wrote about the chapter or answered questions our teachers had asked us. When the book was slowly coming to an end our writing had approved drastically for a lot of students. Now that we had finished reading the book not to long ago. Mrs. Durnin found the movie Project Nim which is what the book Half Brother is based on. Mrs. Durnin bought two copies one for herself and one for Mr.Fisher. So over the the last two days Tuesday and Wednesday we had watched the movie Project Nim and his documentary. Today we started writing a blog post asked to answer quesions based both on Half Brother and Project Nim.
The first question we were asked is what are some smilarities and differences do we notice between the book and the movie. There are some like Nim had a more animalistic personality. While Zan was more humaine and acted more calm and controlled. Then there were some like Zan had lived in a home went to Helsons went back back home then to the place where they keep a lot of chimps and Nim was moved around from a house then to a mansion then to a cage then to LEMSIP and then to the Black Beauty ranch where he lived the rest of his life until he had a heart ache. We also saw Nim through his whole life and knew how he had died and Zan we just read when he was with Ben.
The thing that surprised me most in the documentary was how different Zan and Nim are even though they were based as the same character you could easily tell where they were different from each other. Nim was so much more aggressive then Zan was. Nim had bitten almost everyone and showed his animal more than Zan. Then Nim had smoked a joint and you didn’t read Zan doing anything bad. The thing that disturbed me most was how the first women who got Nim decided to walk back into Nim’s life and think she was still a big part of it but she abandoned Nim. Later when she walked into the cage Nim went crazy and put her on the verge of death to tell her that she shouldn’t have come.
The thing that made me happiest in the movie was that Nim came out fine from LEMSIP and that he went to the Black Beauty ranch where he made friends and lived a better life then he had before he came there instead being used as a scientific project and an image in the media.
I learned that a chimp acts a lot like a human, smoking joints, proffering socialization and having real emotions and that they feel real sad or comfort someone when they are sad and just like to be there for someone. I also learned that chimps get over things fast, Nim had gotten mad at someone before and then after a little bit he went up to the person and was apologizing and being nice.
What defines a person??
Question: Is Zan a person? What defines a person?
We were asked to answer one of four questions about the book half brother. I decided to answer the question Is Zan a person? What defines a person? In the book while we were reading this part it goes through saying that in Ben’s dictionary it says that a person is an individual human being. Ben didn’t like to think that Zan was not considered a person.
Some people believe that if you are not a human than you are not considered a person. Other people believe that a person can be an individual of specified character and not only a human but other species like a chimpanzee. While some people only define a person of what they do with there life and what they earn and do for a job and wouldn’t care if it was a human or an animal. In the past animals were not considered to be a person because they were not physical human beings. Today the word person can define a living human but if it is depending on the context, theory and definition the word person can be used to describe animals and humans.
I think a person is someone from a species who could affect someone else and be affected. A person to me is someone who is living and can be self-conscious about there actions and how they feel. When we think of an individual human we judge them on what they do and how they dress and what their hobbies are. We judge animals on the same thing like saying that a kitten is cute and that a slug or worm is gross. We judge an individual on the same things and treat them like a person but we wont call them a person. If you think of a chimpanzee we are 98.5% the same but we have different body structure, brain intellect and behavior. We have something in common with all animals, we eat the same food as them. That tells us that we have the same amino acids and sugars as them. Biochemical similarity to have the same food. In most part I do think that Zan should be considered a person in his own way.

58 students, two teachers and a monkey
Working with people over 2700 kilometers away had some problems but there were also postive things. Our task was to be split into thirteen groups with some people from Wingham and some people from Snow Lake. I was put into group number six with Tanner, Logan and Chantal researching chimpanzee’s. We worked days on google docs together trying to figure out what topics would fit into our presentation and what kind of information we needed.
As we all started to work together we didn’t talk to eachother once before that and didn’t know eachother, so it was a little awkward. We also didn’t know each others personality so we had to be careful of what we said to them or else it might hurt someones feelings. We worked with eachother for a few days on google docs and started to get to know each other better.
Google docs is an acount that you can make a presentation or write something. You could also invite people to the presentation and they can help you work on it and talk to you while you work so if you disagree you dont have to phone eachother and say i dont like that or just say that is a great idea.
After we had a page or so of information on different topics like enviroment and habits we decidred to start making our presentation. We weren’t perfect and had some problems we had to fix especially when we had background problems and no one could decide what background we liked so we kept changing the background and someone would get mad because it was on there slide and so they deleted it until we talked for a bit of what background we would settle on. Once we got our background problem finished there was a couple of other problems. We didnt know if we wanted some information on it or not, so we decided to have a little bit of information on a couple of slides. We also had a problem on how many pictures we wanted and kept adding and deleting pictures. Near the end we found out for our bibliography we couldnt put in our google pics adress and had to delete them and add different pictures from flickr.
Google Presentations is a site where you can make a slideshow or other stuff and work on it in a group like google docs. Google presentations didn’t have a chat room until about a couple weeks ago so we restarted our presentation to get a chat room except it didn’t work so we restarted our presentation for nothing.
We kept working on it and we got to know each other better as we talked and worked together. We are finishing up our final touches and are going to present it in front of 58 students and a few teachers. I thought it was going to be really hard just being put with strangers and then basically being told to work together and make a presentation in this amount of time because you dont know them and dont know how to react. But it was actually easy working with strangers and was fun when you got to make new friends around your age. It was actually easier working with strangers then your on peers due to you not really wanting to talk to strangers that you might not like and then when you talk to your own friends you would be like, that was a good hockey game last night!
I like working with a different classroom.
