Project Nim and Half Brother

My class has read the book Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel. After we finished reading it, we watched Project Nim, the documentary about what really happened. There were many similarities and differences between the book and documentary. Some things were disturbing and new.

The book Half Brother and the movie Project Nim have many similarities. Many of the people in the documentary reminded me of people from the book. For example Stephanie reminded me of Sarah, and Lily reminded me of Rachel. In both the book and the documentary Nim and Zan bit many people. LEMSIP is like the Hughston Foundation; they’re the lab’s Nim went to, and Zan almost went to. Other similarities are Nim being on the front page of the news, and Zim liking the cat.

There were many differences between the book and movie. In the documentary Nim was afraid of the world, and switched families a lot. In the documentary Nim smoked and drank alcohol, acting a lot more like a human than a chimp. Nim was going to go to court for a trial, but in the book that never happened. Another difference is that Nim had more chimps to play with.

I learned many things in the documentary. I knew that chimps were strong, but I never knew how strong, like dragging Stephanie across his cage. I never knew that chimps needed more chimps to be happy. I didn’t know that chimps were very forgiving, Zan wasn’t very forgiving, he didn’t forget who wronged him, and got revenge. I didn’t know how aggressive chimps were, like when Nim threw a poodle across a room and killed it.

Some parts made me very happy, and others were disturbing. Seeing Nim learning new signs, and using them effectively, made me happy. When Nim hugged the kitty I couldn’t help but smile. When Nim made up his own sign for play, I thought he was so smart, and made me happy. However, seeing Nim in those small cages, were sad and disturbing. When Nim and the other chimps went to the LEMSIP lab, and got tested on was disturbing too. Another disturbing part was when Nim got tazed.

I really enjoyed reading Half Brother and watching Project Nim. There are still some questions I was left with. How many tests did Nim go though before he was saved by the Black Beauty Ranch? What happened to Nim and Lily’s baby? What happened to all the other chimps like Lulu, Ben, and Mitch?

Animal Testing, a Kind of Slavery

My class is reading a book called Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel. Half Brother is about a boy, Ben Tomlin, and his family adopting a chimp, Zan, for a project. This project is to teach a chimp sign language. So, Ben and his family took a chimp from the wild, and are trying to teach him sign language, with the help of university students. My class had the choice to answer one out of three questions, I chose to answer the question: Peter describes Zan’s situation – being taking from the wild and brought up as a human – as a “kind of slavery” (p. 161). What does he mean by this? Do you agree or disagree? Explain.

Peter describes Zan’s situation- being taken from the wild and brought up as a human- as a “kind of slavery”. By this Peter means that taking Zan from his home and making him learn sign language is wrong and like slavery.

I agree with Peter taking Zan from his home and teaching him sign language is like a “kind of slavery”. Zan was taken from his home and is being taught sign language, which isn’t fair to Zan. Zan should be with his family, not being used as an experiment.Zan is another helpless animal being tested on. Zan is being tested on, seeing if they can teach him sign language. Even though he’s not getting hurt or anything, it’s still animal testing. Zan can’t help himself, by saying/signing he doesn’t like being tested on. Like other animals being tested on can’t. Zan being taken from his home in the wild and being brought up like a human is like a kind of slavery.

What’s your opinion? Do you think taking an animal from it’s home and testing on it is wrong? Does your opinion change if the animal is treated well?

Half Brother Connection

My class is reading Half Brother by Kenneth Oppel. We are reading this book on Skype with a class in Snow Lake, Manitoba.  Half Brother is about a family that adopts a chimp, and tries to teach him sign language.

In the story Half Brother, Ben and his family try something new, and adopt a chimp. This reminds me of when I had a family get together at Alora Gorge. I tried something new and went tubing, I wasn’t sure about it at first, like Ben wasn’t sure about Zan. Tubing turned out to be a lot of fun, like Ben is starting to like Zan. cc licensed ( BY NC ND ) flickr photo shared by patries71

Bianknop’s Christmas… Well.. New Years Story

Every New Year, after my family wakes up, we all go to my Grandma and Grandpa’s house to have a family New Year celebration. Every year all my aunts, uncles, and cousins, come to my grandparents house, and play soccer and hockey in the barn. Last year however, was quite funny. Seeing as it was going to be the last New Year soccer and hockey games, we decided to make the most out of it, and play for a long time. So, my family (except most of my aunts and my Grandma) went down to my Grandpa’s barn to play soccer and hockey. We got into our teams and begun to play. Dennis was on a different team than I was, so of course we had to tick each other off by pushing, and getting into each others way. I was really busy bugging him when all of a sudden, BOOM! I was hit in the face by the tennis ball we were playing hockey with. It was really funny, but it hurt a bit too. I wish we could do it again, but sadly my Grandparents moved, therefor, the barn where we used to play soccer and hockey in, is gone. Maybe my family will just play on the rode instead and hopefully I won’t get hit in the face by a tennis ball again.

Adopting A Polar Bear

Polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba Canada are facing problems due to global warming. These large bears rely on the sea ice to hunt seals. However, each year, there is less sea ice, the ice comes later, and leaves earlier than it should. Global warming is melting the sea ice, as a result the seals can’t sit/sleep on it. The polar bears have nothing to hunt. Therefore with nothing to hunt, the polar bears are being forced to come towards the humans, and eat their garbage. That’s bad because, “A fed bear, is a dead bear”. I made a Glogster to summarize my research.

Our teacher, Mrs. D, has a friend that had an awesome opportunity to go to Churchill Manitoba. He would serve as a computer technician for a hard-working crew that would have some live-stream online videos that talk about the polar bears. First, on their website, one of the students in our class has noticed you could adopt a polar bear, and he thought that we should adopt one. So that student presented his idea to our class, and we all agreed to commit, by bringing in money. Secondly, we set a goal of $250, and calculated to reach out goal, we needed to bring in about $8.25 each. Then some of our class members stayed in at break to create a chart to show the amount of money we collected. Over the next two weeks we were encouraged to bring in out money. We all committed, and bring our money, as we said we would. Many people brought more than their share, bringing us up higher then we thought. Together we earned a total of $293. WAY over our goal! Lastly we adopted our polar bear.

I thought that this was a really cool experience. I think we are a very lucky class to have that opportunity. I would never have imagined we would have adopted a polar bear. I was very surprised how much money we raised! I would never have thought we could raise $294. But we did it out of the kindness our our hearts. I think our class is very lucky to have all these great opportunities. We have a really awesome teacher, who let us have this awesome opportunity. I wonder what else Mrs D. has in store for us this year!

Keep On Running

This year my class has been running. We have recorded our time, pace, and distance. Throughout the fall, we have made improvements and goals. All my improvements and goals has helped me run faster, by pacing myself, and knowing the speed that I need to keep a steady pace.
I have made running improvements this fall. I am able to pace myself, normally, I’d give it my all at the beginning, but now I know not to do that, because it wears me out faster. I can run farther, without stopping. I can also run faster in long distances. My improvements help me cut down on time, and will be worth it in soccer, and other sports. It’s going to be hard to run when the snow arrives!
I have set goals to improve my physical fitness. I set a goal to paced myself, in order to run for longer without stopping. I have also set a goal to keep running, and not stop, unless necessary. My goals have helped me out by giving me a reason to run, and pushed me to do better. I think my goals have helped me, and make me want to set more goals, not just for gym, but for other subjects. My % improvement is 6%, wow! My goals helped with that difference! Anyone can run, but a runner makes goals to improve their running.
Andrew Pescod
My running improvements relied on my goals. I want to make a new goal, I want to try to run every day, until the snow arrives. With my new goal, maybe I can change my % improvement even more!

Ten Marks And A Train Ticket

Ten Marks and a Train Ticket
By, Susy Goldstein, Gina Hamilton, and Wendy Share.

Introduction:
Hitler is taking over Germany, executing the Jews in concentration camps. It is no longer safe for Benno, and his older brother Heinz. My class read the book Ten Marks And A Train Ticket this book. This book is all about Benno escaping Germany, when Hitler took power. Ten Marks And A Train Ticket is written by Susy Goldstein, Gina Hamilton, and Wendy Share.

Timeline:
TMTT Timeline

Graphics:
Page 43.
Benno and Heinz are hiding under train seats, in a dark compartment, trying not to get caught. If they get caught they would be sent back to Germany. This image sticks out to me because I couldn’t imagine being so quite just to stay alive. It must have been so difficult to do, staying quite, even making a loud breath, or coughing, would have sent them straight back to Germany. If I were Benno then, I wouldnt have been able to keep so quite, I would probably have sniffled, or started crying out of fear for getting caught.

Quotation:
Page 60, last paragraph.
“After lunch, the Mother Superior called in a loud voice ‘I have been informed that some of you are to be moved.”. It was true, we are leaving.”

This quote is important. It is important to the setting because, it means that Benno and Heinz will go to another place. This changes the setting. This is important to the story because the place where they might go could make the story interesting, by adding a problem, or conflict.

Conclusion:
I really enjoyed Ten Marks And A Train Ticket. I like this book because it’s telling a true story, and I enjoy learning about the Holocaust. I learned about the places Jewish refugees went for safety. I was surprised that some of the refugees were sent to an orphanage. I never knew that, and I didn’t expect it either.

Questions I have:
How many Jews hid from the Nazi’s (if any), and didn’t get caught?
In section 2, why did the guards at the border or Holland, just let Heinz and Benno in the second time?

Idea Hive Similarities and Differences

In the Idea Hive, grade 7-8’s are Skyping together. We Skype together to learn together. And about each other, like how different our lives are, being we live 2700 miles apart! They live in Manitoba, and we live in Ontario! It is quite interesting learning about our life styles, and I cant wait to learn more about Snow Lake!

   mrmayo
Something everyone in the Idea Hive has in common is, that we all have a favourite  subject/thing to do in school. Most people in the idea hive do NOT play an instrument. Katelyn, Lyndon, Kassie, Quader67, and I, are an example of people who don’t. A few people in the idea hive like playing soccer. Kassie, Juli and me! I was the only who wished for my cousin to get better, others wished for super powers, like flying, or reading minds.Madisyn is most like me. She wants to be a vet, doesn’t know her favorite sports team, and brushes her teeth 2 times a day. I am the same as Madisyn, I want to be a vet, I don’t know my favorite sports team, and brush my teeth 2 times a day!
I wonder if anyone from Snow Lake has ever been to Wingham?

My Super Summer

My summer just had ups and downs.
The most memorable day of my summer is the day I went to the theaters to watch Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2! I have seen each movie and almost begged to go see the last one!  Thankfully my Mom wanted to watch too, so it didn’t take too much to convince her! And as a special treat, my Mom agreed we could see it in 3d! It was awesome! I cant wait for it to come out in DVD!

The one day I wish NEVER happened this summer would be July 25, the day my old bunny Peter died. The poor bunny had fly blone! That is when flys and maggots eat your skin! It sure was a good thing my friends mom knew what it was. We tried to save Peter by bathing the scar in temped water( both hot and cold, I guess you could call it nice water.)  with salt. Sadly Peter couldn’t fight it because it had spread too far.:( RIP Peter:(.                                                                                                           LucienT

The person I spent the most time with this summer would be my best friend Bryoney! Together we went camping in Paisley and Cookstown. Almost each day that we were at her house, we went swimming in the Teeswater pool. Each day at my house we went  swimming in my pool. We LOVE swimming, and spending time together!

That was my summer! Lots of ups and downs. What was the most unexpected thing that
happened to you this summer? Would you change anything about your summer?
